COVID-19: What is Proper Hand Washing?

Hand washing is the number one tip for stopping the spread of COVID-19.  While this is common sense, it must be done properly to be effective.  Washing our hands regularly not only stops the spread of disease during a pandemic but is also crucial to stop the spread of other illnesses such as the common cold and flu.

Always remember to wash your hands in the following situations:

  • After returning from a public outing
  • Before leaving the bathroom (both at home and in public)
  • After shaking hands
  • Before, during, and after preparing food
  • Before eating
  • Before and after caring for someone who is sick
  • After touching public computers, devices, money, and public tables

How can I wash my hands to prevent the spend of the coronavirus?

The steps to properly wash hands include:

  • Wet hands with warm water
  • Apply soap
  • Wash hands for at least 20 seconds (about the length of time it takes to sing Happy Birthday twice)
  • Wash your palms, the back of each hand, between your fingers, thumbs and underneath nails
  • Rinse well
  • Dry hands with a paper towel
  • Turn off tap using the paper towel

Remember that people can transmit COVID-19 and other illnesses even if they do not show any symptoms.  Take care of yourself and others by always remembering to wash your hands.
