Celebrating Christmas during COVID-19

Each province and territory within Canada has taken precautions but the restrictions are not the same from area to area.

The entire world is feeling the effects of COVID-19 and Canada is no exception.  Each province and territory within Canada has taken precautions but the restrictions are not the same from area to area.  Below is a map current as of December 9, 2020 of the COVID-19 cases in Canada per province/territory.

To help Canadians determine what the restrictions are for different areas of Canada we have compiled the following list:

While following the current restrictions can be challenging, it does not mean that we cannot find meaningful ways to celebrate the holidays.

Christmas may just require a little more creativity this year than it normally does.  Some suggestions are:

  • Decide what traditions matter most to you.  This could include decorations, food, music, etc.  While it may not be realistic to do all of our normal traditions, there are parts of all the traditions that we can do.  For example, are there specific foods you tend to have at Christmas time?  Choose one or two and half the recipe if need be.
  • If giving presents is important to you, shop early.  With so many online shoppers this year shipping companies will be busy.
  • Decorate your patio or a tree outside.  To help ensure the decorations stay where they’re supposed to use twist ties or florist’s wire as you put them on.
  • Make a Christmas ornament
  • Create new traditions.  Get creative and think of fun ways to celebrate with your family.  This could include creating an advent calendar, watching Christmas movies, recording Christmas carols to email or text to your family, trying new board games, etc.
  • Use technology to connect with family and friends.  Who says you can’t open presents over zoom?
  • Do the 12 days of Christmas for a family that you know is struggling because of the pandemic.  Finding ways to help the people around you will lift both your spirits.
  • Send Christmas cards to family and friends that you won’t be able to see.
  • Call Santa.  While we can’t do in person visits with him this year, Santa still wants to see our kids.  Click here or here to find out more

  • Make a holiday playlist full of songs that make you smile
  • Go sledding
  • Do a 25 days of Giving Box and help your local food bank or a family in need (https://www.retailmenot.com/blog/ideas-for-celebrating-christmas-during-covid-19.html)
  • Go for a walk/ride and look at Christmas lights

Whatever you decide to do this holiday season, please follow the restrictions for your area, stay staff, and have a Merry Christmas!
