Many provincial governments depend largely on the national Alert Ready system for public notifications. This system primarily delivers alerts through LTE-connected devices and broadcasters. While this approach works well for most people, it does not reach everyone, particularly those in rural areas with unreliable cell coverage, households on streaming services, or individuals who rely on landlines.

Alert Ready reaches many, but not everyone. Populations without reliable cellular LTE, cable TV, and local radio access are often left out of emergency alerts.

Various provincial agencies and partner organizations often use separate tools, resulting in duplicate messages, inconsistent timing, and reduced situational awareness.

PROBLEM

The 2013 Calgary Flood exposed serious gaps in how emergency alerts reached people. Smartphones were everywhere, yet wireless alerts didn’t yet exist in Canada. Warnings went out on TV, radio, websites, and social media, missing those commuting, at work, or away from screens. The event made one thing clear: Alberta needed a faster, more direct way to reach people on their phones.

SOLUTION

In response, Alberta partnered with us to deliver alerts straight to smartphones. The result was Canada’s first provincial mobile alerting system. The app lets users set alert zones for home, work, or school; receive “follow me” alerts for their current location, and access official updates instantly from trusted sources. It brought the same verified alerts from TV and radio directly into people’s hands.

IMPACT

Alberta became the first province to give residents and visitors real-time smartphone notifications. Hundreds of thousands downloaded the app, dramatically extending the reach of emergency messages. Now, even those without cable, local radio, reliable cellular, or English/French fluency receive critical alerts instantly, making the province’s alerting faster, broader, and more inclusive.
