Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drills Happening October 17

PEASI is participating in the Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drills by sending Earthquake Drill notifications to Alertable users this Thursday, October 17 at 10:17 a.m. Millions of people worldwide will practice how to “Drop, Cover and Hold On” during these drills.

Participating is a great way for you, your family or your organization to be prepared to survive and recover quickly following earthquakes where you live, work, or travel. As of today, over 22 million people worldwide are registered to participate in the October 17th drill, including more than 820,000 participants in British Columbia, 100,000 in Quebec and 1,000 in the Yukon.

Emergency management experts and other official preparedness organizations agree that “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” is the appropriate action to reduce injury and death during earthquakes:

  • DROP where you are, onto your hands and knees
  • Take COVER by getting under a sturdy desk or table, and protect your head and neck with one arm and hand
  • HOLD ON until the shaking stops

These are general guidelines, but depending on where you are (in bed, driving, at work, etc.), there may be other actions to take. For more information, check out these guidelines from shakeout.org.

PEASI will be sending Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drill notifications to Alertable users in BC, Quebec and the Yukon this Thursday. To receive the notification, simply download the Alertable App. And be sure to share the alert with your friends and family to help spread the word about earthquake safety and the steps to take to stay safe during an earthquake.
