Don’t Use Google Alerts - Use Alertable for Emergency Alerts

Googling alerts during emergencies can be confusing and slow. Here's my experience and why I switched to Alertable for fast, accurate, and trusted alerts.

When an emergency strikes, every second matters. For many of us, the instinct is to grab our phones and start Googling alerts, hoping to find answers fast. But more often than not, that quick search leads to more confusion than clarity—outdated pages, vague headlines, or worse, nothing relevant at all.

I’ve been there. In this blog, I’ll share a personal story about the frustration of trying to Google emergency alerts during a real-life situation—and why I now rely on Alertable instead. Whether it's an Amber Alert, a weather warning, or a local evacuation order, Alertable gives you the information you need right away, in one place, without the guesswork. If you've ever felt anxious and overwhelmed while trying to piece together emergency information from search results, this post is for you.

Google Alerts: A Frustrating Night

In November 2017, I attended the International Association of Emergency Managers (IAEM) annual conference in Long Beach, California. Late one night, I was jolted awake by the shrill tone of a wireless emergency alert on my phone. Still half-asleep, I assumed it was part of a demo—maybe a new emergency alerting technology being showcased at the conference. But as I blinked myself fully awake, I realized this was no demonstration. It was a real emergency alert broadcast through the U.S. Wireless Emergency Alert (WEA) system. The message was vague: “Check your local media.” That was it—no context, no location, no instructions. Confused and concerned, I did what most people would do: I turned to Google.

I typed “Long Beach emergency” into the search bar, hoping for immediate clarity. Nothing relevant came up. I tried “Orange County emergency alert”—still nothing useful. Growing increasingly anxious, I started refining my searches, limiting results to the past 24 hours. Still, nothing helpful.

“If this is a real emergency, shouldn’t there be more information out there?” I thought. Desperate, I went to the Long Beach Emergency Alerts page. No updates. Instead, I was prompted to create an account and sign up for notifications—a time-consuming and frustrating process, especially in the middle of a potential emergency.

Eventually, after more trial and error, I searched “California emergency alert” with the right filters and finally found what I was looking for: an Amber Alert for a 1-year-old child issued by the Sacramento California Highway Patrol. The alert didn’t apply to my situation directly, but at least I had an answer. Still, the entire experience left me feeling frustrated, anxious, and, honestly, a little helpless.

Why Googling Alerts Just Isn’t Enough

That night made one thing crystal clear: trying Google Alerts in an emergency is far from ideal.

First, it puts the burden on you, the user, to actively search for the right information—often while panicked, disoriented, or in a time crunch. And if you don’t know the right keywords or search filters, you may find yourself digging through irrelevant, outdated, or even misleading results.

Second, there’s no centralized source. I bounced between Google, government websites, and news pages, trying to piece together what was happening. In a real emergency, this kind of delay and inefficiency could put lives at risk.

The whole ordeal underscored something I’ve come to believe deeply: search engines are great for many things, but they shouldn’t be your go-to for emergency alerts.

Alertable: A Better Alternative to Google Alerts

When an emergency alert hits your phone, your instinct might be to turn to Google. But as we’ve seen, that approach often leads to more questions than answers. Alertable offers a better way.

Instead of forcing you to search and piece together information from various sources, Alertable delivers everything you need—accurate, timely, and easy to understand—all in one place. Connected to Canada’s national public alerting system, Alert Ready, the app provides immediate access to all official wireless public alerts issued in the country, complete with full descriptions and clear safety instructions. Here’s why Alertable stands out:

  • Immediate and Comprehensive Information - Alertable doesn’t just say, “Check local media.” It gives you the what, where, and what-to-do right away—whether it’s a wildfire, flood, Amber Alert, or other emergency. You don’t need to guess, scroll, or search for answers.
  • Trusted, Official Sources - Because it’s directly connected to Alert Ready, the information you receive on Alertable is verified and current. You’re not relying on news articles, social media, or random blog posts that show up when you Google alerts.
  • Clean, User-Friendly Design - No more hunting through pages of links or filtering search results. Alertable’s intuitive interface puts the most important info front and center, making it easier to understand and act fast.
  • Real-Time Push Notifications - Alerts come to you. With instant push notifications, you’re informed the moment something happens—no need to refresh a page or search online. When seconds count, this kind of proactive alerting can make a real difference.

Why You Should Stop Trying to Google Alerts

If you’ve ever had to scramble for details after receiving a vague emergency alert, you already know how frustrating and time-consuming it can be. Googling alerts in the middle of a crisis means wading through outdated posts, misinformation, and contradictory reports.

Alertable changes that.

It provides everything you need—accurate, real-time updates in a format that’s easy to understand. There’s no guesswork, no wasted time, and no confusion, just actionable information when and where you need it.

The Power of Proactive Alerting with Alertable

One of Alertable’s biggest advantages? It doesn’t wait for you to go looking for information.

The app proactively notifies you as soon as an alert is issued. That means you get a head start on preparation—whether it’s securing your home ahead of a storm or staying off the roads during a flood.

Let’s compare:

  • Severe weather - With Alertable: You get the alert early, along with specific details. You know what’s coming and how to prepare. With Google: You’re manually searching, hoping to find something accurate and recent.
  • Amber Alerts - With Alertable: You get a complete description of the child, suspect, and vehicle instantly. With Google: You may find conflicting reports or none at all until news outlets catch up.
  • Natural disasters - With Alertable: You’re told exactly what happened, where, and what to do next. With Google: You might get a vague alert, then spend minutes searching for reliable info during a critical moment.

The Future of Emergency Alerts: Moving Beyond Searching Google Alerts

Emergency alerting is evolving—and for good reason. The traditional methods we once relied on, like waiting for news updates or Googling alerts, simply aren’t fast or reliable enough in today’s world. When every second counts, fragmented, delayed, or inaccurate search results can cost precious time and create dangerous confusion.

The need for reliable, real-time, and easily accessible information has never been more critical. That’s why platforms like Alertable are paving the way for the future of emergency communication.

A Smarter, Faster Way to Stay Informed

Instead of requiring users to actively search for details—as you would when Googling alerts—Alertable delivers emergency updates straight to your device the moment they are issued. Whether it’s a wildfire, evacuation order, power outage, or missing child alert, you’ll know exactly what’s happening and what to do without the stress of hunting for information.

Key advantages of this next-generation approach:

  • Proactive, real-time alerts instead of reactive searches
  • Centralized, official information instead of fragmented results
  • Clear safety instructions instead of vague news headlines
  • Peace of mind instead of panic and confusion

Why Alertable Is Better Than Google Alerts

In emergencies, having access to accurate and timely information can make all the difference. While it’s natural to instinctively turn to Google Alerts or search engines for answers, this approach is often ineffective. Google searches can yield fragmented results, outdated content, or even misinformation—especially problematic when every second matters. The unpredictable and urgent nature of emergencies demands a faster, more reliable solution that eliminates the guesswork and ensures the information you receive is both accurate and actionable.

Alertable provides a comprehensive, trusted alternative by centralizing all critical alerts in one easy-to-use app. With real-time updates and verified information from official sources, Alertable removes the need for frantic online searches and gives you immediate clarity in times of crisis. Instead of wasting time scrolling through search results, you can focus on what truly matters: your safety and the safety of those around you. Choosing Alertable means choosing peace of mind. You no longer have to worry about missing critical information or second-guessing whether you’re adequately informed. Everything you need is delivered directly to your device—timely, accurate, and easy to understand. So, the next time an emergency strikes, don’t Google Alerts. Be prepared. Be confident. Download Alertable.
